A school-focused bill packed with new laws includes a section about what schools must do if they discover a child with head lice.

According to Senate Bill 1566, starting Sept. 1, schools are required to notify a parent within five days if their child is in the same classroom with a student diagnosed with head lice.

The new law also says parents must be notified within 48 hours if their child is discovered to have head lice.

The Texas Department of State Health Services says it does not consider lice a public health threat as they do not carry disease, and therefore, does not track or monitor them.
