A boy from Delhi, who went missing six years ago, has been found in Bangladesh and will be brought back to his family in India on June 30.
Twelve-year-old boy Sonu vanished from the premises of his house in Delhi on May 23, 2010. Soon after he disappeared, Sonu's family received a call from a woman who demanded a ransom in exchange for the child, Indian media reported. Official details of how the boy had gone missing are not yet known. He is presently staying at the Jessore Juvenile Development Center in Bangladesh.
According to the Bangladeshi media, the boy claimed he was trafficked by a woman named Rahima from New Delhi to Barguna, a town in Bangladesh. Rahima's family tortured the child and forced him to do all the household chores, which made their neighbors suspicious. One of them, Jamaluddin, contacted the Human Rights Commission in Dhaka, who then started looking for Sonu's family. Meanwhile, the boy was sent to a child rehabilitation center on December 22, 2015, said Assistant Director of the center Mohammad Shahabuddin, quoting court documents.
India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Tuesday that the Indian High Commission in Dhaka has obtained Sonu's custody and that he will be reunited with his mother in Delhi on June 30.
Swaraj also thanked those people who looked after Sonu in Bangladesh and those who brought the matter to her notice.
