An innocent game of hide-and-seek turned into a tragedy that reverberated across the country Wednesday when four children died in the West Bekaa after being locked in a car trunk and asphyxiated. Yasmine Faleh al-Aaskar, 5, Shahed Abdel-Mouin al-Hasan, 3 Bayan Ahmad al-Hasan, 3 and Lynn Hussein Kassem, 4, were thought to be playing a game of hide-and-seek when they stowed themselves away in the trunk of a family member’s car.

Once inside, the girls became trapped – there being no internal mechanism for them to free themselves. Unable to open the trunk, the children’s air supply ran out and three of the four slowly suffocated.

Family members frantically attempted to administer CPR to the fourth girl, but the child passed away soon after being discovered.

The children were rushed to the Farhat and Chtoura hospitals, where all four were pronounced dead.

“This is very tragic ... words cannot describe the sorrow we feel at this huge loss,” Baalbeck’s former Mufti Sheikh Bakr al-Rifai told The Daily Star. “We do not want to add to [the parent’s] pain, but there has to be awareness and responsibility.”
